Colonies creates music that balances sweeping soundscapes, rich textures and expressive melodies. Christian Powers (guitar) and Travis Shumate (vocals, guitar, keys) have been writing songs together since 1999 and formed Colonies in 2006 with Adrian Centoni (drums) and Adam Meeks (bass, keys) with a desire to make honest and sincere music.
With the release of their 2007 EP, Sleep Patterns, Colonies crafted a series of songs dealing with geography and history as much as they deal with relationships. Berlin, Argentina and the mountains of Idaho provide the setting for stories that deal with the familiar themes of love, war and change.
Colonies followed up their self-released EP with their debut full-length album, Thirty Thousand (2009)-a bolder, bigger, and more sweeping undertaking. Dealing heavily with Argentina's Dirty War and military junta, Thirty Thousand provides a wide scope of perspectives and sounds. The songs draw on evocative post-rock, driving rhythms, shoegaze textures, and come replete with orchestral flourishes and intricate compositions. They are currently recording their follow-up release.
